Abstract

This paper presents a conceptual and computational model for the emergence of initial (raw) qualia in a classical, low-energy brain. We propose that the intralaminar and matrix nuclei of the thalamus perform a simple coarse classification via the product of current input connection density (Density) and historical assembly depth tracked as a moving average (MA). This Density × MA score generates a continuous phase gradient—rather than a binary on/off switch—manifesting as the dynamic flow of subjective experience (qualia). The model operates entirely within classical physics and neurobiology, requiring only 20 W of power, consistent with the human brain’s remarkable efficiency. Qualia is not an additional property but the flow itself: a real-time, relational perspective that enables instantaneous adaptation in an uncertain world. Intensity is dominated by Density (vivid “now”), while Texture reflects MA (personal historical flavor), naturally explaining both individual differences (“my red”) and intersubjective communicability. A minimal Erdős–Rényi network simulation reproduces conscious-zone phase transitions, and a smartphone-based 5-phase experiment demonstrates the model’s intuitive accessibility. Thermodynamically, qualia-bearing systems act as local negentropy engines, resisting (animals) or actively reversing (humans) entropy increase—providing a clear evolutionary rationale for subjective experience. This framework integrates insights from Assembly Theory and Relational Quantum Mechanics while remaining fully classical. It is offered as an open conceptual model to be tested and refined through future empirical work (fMRI, EEG, neuromorphic hardware).
